Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for artistic expression and creative thinking. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theater during daylight hours. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how art can be used to engage people. DuVernay was raised by a mother who was socially conscious and taught her to make use of the arts as a way of expression. DuVernay was a resident of Compton for most of her youth, however she spent every summer in the company of her father's extended family in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father recalled watching the civil rights march of the past on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by the summers she spent in Selma and decided to make the documentary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and earned degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to observe the house of one member of the jury, and then go through their garbage. Her disappointment was evident in her journalistic duties and decided to move into the field of public relations. DuVernay was hired right after graduating from college as a junior publicist at the studio that was small. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999.
